The manager of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger has made an interesting statement, once admitted that in previous seasons have purposely not put optimal form in the tournament for the Cup of England, to watch the contestants for the meetings of the UEFA Champions League.
'The matches for the Cup are very uncomfortable in the calendar - just before those of the Champions League. It often happened in this period of the year the players are tired enough to put me in front of selection in which one of these two games to give them a break. Of course that's not going to happen in the fights of the Champions League.', said Wenger, whose team visits tonight in 1/4-final match of the tournament at Manchester United.
In 2008, Wenger has taken just such a strategy. Then his team visit the United again and the Frenchman retained some of his best players for a meeting with AC Milan, which was a few days later. Arsenal lost with 0: 4 by United, but achieved a draw 0:0 in Milan, which eventually proved enough to rank the team forward in the Champions League.
'Several times I happened to put your best players in the meetings of the FA Cup and that's when they are injured. That was a lot of unpleasant moments as the superhero us important duels in the next three or four days.', added Wenger.
The Frenchman, however, does not answer the question of whether to expect an optimal composition for the meeting at Old Trafford. Arsenal defended the trophy from last season, the next battle in the Champions League after 8 days, and the result is more of the untoward - 3:1 in favour of Monaco after the meeting in London.
