Buffon and Pirlo survived 20 years in a cult game

16.11.2017

Canluigi Buffon`s remarkable career in Italy`s national team ended days ago, and earlier in the month, Andrea Pirlo announced he is putting an end to his great football career. And while Gigi remains under Juventus, Pirlo will enjoy his vacation deservedly.

The release of the next edition of Football Manager`s football simulation, this time with the 2018 add-on, marks 20 years of another great game - Championship Manager 97/98. What, however, is the common between Buffon, Pirlo and the two computer games where many fans have experienced their dreams as coaches and have brought their favorite teams to the top? That the legendary Italians are one of the last Mohicans to be present in the game, then, and now.

In CM 97/98, Buffon is a 19-year-old gallblad adolescent in Parma. Even then, however, its performance is impressive. Everybody knows what`s going on then, but we`re still going to see if FM 2018 will be his last show in the series.

20 years ago, Pirlo is part of his native Brescia. The 18-year-old talent is far from his right position in the middle of the pitch and is described as an striker. While actually dropping out of football, Pirlo is also present in the Football Manager 2018 database.

The two Italian giants, however, are not the only survivors of the virtual soccer world since CM 97/98 to date. Other interesting names are that of Roy Carroll, who is then in Wigan and now part of Linfield. The cult of Gabor Kiri was part of Herta two decades ago, and now he plays for his native Sombathey, 41 years old. Here are other longevists, as well as their teams in the 1997/1998 game and nowadays:

Robbie Keane (Wolverhampton / Atletico de Kolkata)

Wes Brown (Manchester United / Kerala Blastars)

Zey Roberto (Real Madrid / Palmeiras)
Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes / Estudiantes)
Lee Hendry (Aston Villa / Free Agent)

Kenny Miller (Free Agent / Rangers)
