Greek journalist investigating match-fixing is beaten up

5.09.2012

Greek journalist who is investigating the affair with fixed football matches, was attacked by unknown armed with a metal box, and was hospitalized, AFP news agency announced, which cited the media syndicate.

"The Union of Greek editors strongly condemns the attack against the sports editor Avestas Aris who was attacked in the rear and early on Monday morning at his home," the union said in a statement and stated that "Avestas was hit in the face."

The Union points out that this attack "is not only against journalists in Greece" victims of "many aggressions and threats" and appealed to the authorities "to act vigorously and bring the perpetrators to justice."

The union argues that "over the past three months, three other sports editors were attacked by people who try to put a muzzle on the press and to hide their connections with organized crime." Aris Avestas repeatedly investigated and published articles about the fixed football games in Greece, wrote the Union of Greek editors.
