World and Olympic champions from the United States have begun with a tough victory to take part in world basketball qualifying. In Orlando, Jeff van Gundy`s selection was 85:78 over Puerto Rico in a C-band match in America. The US team, made up entirely of Development League players, was lagging behind the break by 1 point at 38:39 but showed stronger nerves in the second part and made its first success on the road to China.
Jamil Warney and Reggie Hern were the most successful for the American team with 17 points and Xavier Mungord scored another 12. For Puerto Rican players, Angel Vassayo scored 16 points and Angel Rodriguez finished with 11.
In the other matchfrom the Mexican group prevailed over Cuba with 72:66.
In Group A, Argentina defeated easily Paraguay with 96:63. Luis Scola scored 22 points for the Gauchoos and Lucio Redibo added 16. Paraguay Gabriel Peralta scored 14 points.
In the last game for the night, also from group A, Uruguay defeated Panama with 86:73 after 21 points of Esteban Battista.
