 | | Andrea Stella: Norris`s first victory depended on McLaren, not on Lando - we knew he would give results16.05.2024 |
McLaren commented on Norris’s long path to his first victory.
McLaren boss Andrea Stella said he had no doubts about the abilities of Lando Norris, who won his first Formula 1 race at the Miami Grand Prix.
It was a bit of a weight on his shoulders, realistically speaking. But also on ours, because we knew: as soon as we give Lando the equipment to win, he will give results.
So we felt a responsibility, and I talked about it many times. It felt like it was up to us, not Lando.
We must give Lando his due: he continued to develop and improved over the winter - especially, for example, in qualifying. In addition, he now shows very mature control of the race.
Once he realized there was little he could do after the first lap, he began to conserve his tires because he knew the moment would come. And then, when the cars in front pulled into the pits, he showed an incredible pace.
“He’s very fast in qualifying – sometimes even too fast – and shows a very mature approach in racing, getting the best out of himself, ” said Norris’ boss.
